CDC's HIV Treatment Works: Yuri's Story: Slow me down, HIV? Not in this lifetime. I've always been a very active person. I've always been in sports and have always been a very outdoorsy person. So, living with HIV has -- I think that shouldn't stop you from being who you are or enjoying the things that you like to enjoy. In my case, it's, you know, outdoor activities. So, ever since the diagnosis, I have not stopped.

 

It has encouraged me to continue more and to be more active. So, when I found out I was HIV positive, I was shocked because I worked in HIV prevention. And it was pretty ironic that it happened to me. I was a little scared because of the stigma that surrounds the illness. When I found out I was positive, I got into medical care right away.

I was linked to care the minute that my test results came back positive, and I started medication almost immediately. I think it's essential to take drugs because it will help you live longer and live better. It's more beneficial for your health. I think it's vital to build an amicable relationship with your medical provider because he's your, like, go-to guy or girl.

 

When something's going on with your body, if you feel sick or if you feel that there's something, you're coming down with something that you can, you know, call, pick up the phone and call your doctor and say, "Hey," you know, "I feel sick, so can I come in?" or "When can I come in?" or "What do you recommend based on the symptoms?" Living with HIV means living well, living healthy, living longer, living better.

 

So, I think it's essential to take care of yourself, take your medication, you know, exercise, stay away from any drugs or alcohol or smoke, anything. I am not living with HIV; HIV is living with me. HIV Treatment works. Get in
