HIV Treatment Works: Quoc Story
HIV Treatment Works: Quoc’s Story: I have lived a lifetime living with HIV, and I can’t ask you Away. But I can indeed find ways to manage you.” I remember Denise saying, “Do you have any questions before I give you the results?”. And I remember her sliding that little purple sheet across, and hearing. “Your results came back positive.” It’s interesting, and I was already volunteering as a part of our empowerment project talking about prevention, talking about hope, talking about meds.
HIV Treatment Works:
When I know that I was HIV positive, it took me nine months before I ended up in the hospital. I remember the doctor saying to me, “Quoc, so, your CD4 is 238, you’re close to an AIDS diagnosis. Your viral load is 750,000. You are dying, and you desperately need meds. I just burst into tears, and I’d just given up in that given moment. Finally was willing to take some direction to bring me back to health again. The meds have been working great. I’ve been on them since 2003, and viral load has continued to be suppressed.
I can count on one hand how many times I’ve missed doses of HIV meds. Because I know that adherence is that much more important to me. I’m very blessed to get to work in the field, so I’m surrounded by people who are very– have a very positive and optimistic outlook on HIV. Because again, in the scope of my 12 years of living with HIV now, I certainly have realized that HIV is just a tiny component of who I am. So, I encourage people who are newly diagnosed, the same thing– there is a community of people who will embrace you and share the love with you, but you’ve got to allow us to come into your space, and hopefully, feel that love.
